Song Lyric Sunday – Check Yes Juliet by We The Kings

This is yet another band that my daughter introduced me to and I ended up falling in love with. I haven’t followed them much recently, but their first two or three albums were some of my favorites. I’ve seen them perform live on a few occasions, one such night being one of my favorite concerts. I lost my voice and everything!

This song doesn’t have the word “game” in it, but it is about a game, so I figured it fit the theme well enough. I don’t necessarily consider myself old, but when you think about how far technology has come and how fast it happened, I suppose that pretty much ages me. We used to write hand-written notes to each other in elementary and junior high school, and one such note would be a simple little question from a boy to a girl or vice-versa. I also used it for my girlfriends when we were fighting and I was trying to make up with them. “Do you like me?” It would include two answers with little check boxes next to them – “Yes or No”.

While it seemed like a life or death situation back then, it was really just a fun game and I love the reference in this song. I, for one, thought of running away many times when I was younger. Not only that, if Travis Clark was throwing rocks at my window, I would run out of that house so fast, no one could catch me.

I hope you enjoy!

Check yes Juliet
Are you with me?
Rain is falling down on the sidewalk
I won’t go until you come outside
Check yes Juliet
Kill the limbo
I’ll keep tossing rocks at your window
There’s no turning back for us tonight
Lace up your shoes
Eh oh eh oh
Here’s how we do
Run, baby, run
Don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart
If you give them the chance
Don’t sell your heart
Don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run, baby, run
Forever we’ll be
You and me
Check yes Juliet
I’ll be waiting
Wishing, wanting
Yours for the taking
Just sneak out
And don’t tell a soul goodbye
Check yes Juliet
Here’s the countdown
Three, two, one, now fall in my arms
Now they can change the locks
Don’t let them change your mind
Lace up your shoes
Eh oh eh oh
Here’s how we do
Run, baby, run
Don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart
If you give them the chance
Don’t sell your heart
Don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run, baby, run
Forever we’ll be
You and me
We’re flying through the night
We’re flying through the night
Way up high,
The view from here is getting better with
You by my side
Run, baby, run
Don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart
If you give them the chance
Don’t sell your heart
Don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run, baby, run
Forever we’ll be
You and me
Run, baby, run
Don’t ever look back.
They’ll tear us apart
If you give them the chance.
Don’t sell your heart.
Don’t say we’re not meant to be.
Run, baby, run.
Forever we’ll be
You and me.
You and me
You and me

Song Lyric Sunday – Angels Fall by Breaking Benjamin

This is one of those bands that I started listening to with my daughter when she was in junior high/high school, so I know there’s lots of their music that I haven’t heard.  I fell in love with their 2006 album, “Phobia”, and didn’t think I would love another album quite as much.  When my son told me they had released a new album in 2015, I decided to check it out, not really thinking it would go anywhere.

Boy was I wrong.  I love “Dark Before Dawn” so much.  It is dark and sad, but I honestly can’t stop listening to it.  I’ve shared a few songs from this album, but I’ve honestly been waiting for the chance to share this one as well.  I don’t think I could even explain why this song and this album have become favorites of mine.  In some ways, it feels like the story they are telling is my own.

I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do!

I tried to face the fight within
But it’s over
I’m ready for the riot to begin and surrender
I walked the path, it led me to the end, remember
I’m caught beneath with nothing left to give, forever
When angels fall with broken wings
I can’t give up, I can’t give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I’ll carry you and we will live forever, for ever
Grey skies will chase the light away, no longer
I fought the fight, now only dark remains forever
Divided I will stand
And I will let this end
When angels fall with broken wings
I can’t give up, I can’t give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I’ll carry you and we will live forever, for ever
The sun begins to rise and wash away the sky
The turning of the tide, don’t leave it all behind
And I will never say goodbye
When angels fall with broken wings
I can’t give up, I can’t give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I’ll carry you and we will live forever, for ever
Forever, forever

Song Lyric Sunday – Bright Lights by Matchbox Twenty

I mentioned last week that I was surprised I had only posted one song by Matchbox Twenty.  They were the very first alternative band that I fell in love with all on my own.  Most of the music I had listened to previously had been someone else’s passion and I just happened to jump on their ride.  I did fall in love with Country music for a while, but this band is what finally made me leave that world behind.  There’s just something about listening to this band that brings me back to me, if that makes sense.

I first heard them on the radio and then fell into the Alternative music world slowly but surely all on my own.  I think the reason this music feels so much like home is that it kept me going when I wasn’t even sure who I was or where I belonged or even if I belonged.  I guess you could say music kept me more sane than I would have been without it.

Also, I think Rob Thomas is brilliant; his voice and his lyrics.  He’s also not too bad to look at, if I’m being honest.

I do hope you enjoy!

She got out of town
On the railway New York bound
Took all except my name
Another alien on Broadway
There’s some things in this world
You just can’t change
Some things you can’t see
Until it gets too late
And baby, baby, baby
When all your love is gone
Who will save me
From all I’m up against out in this world
And maybe, maybe, maybe
You’ll find something
That’s enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don’t receive you
You should turn yourself around
And come on home
I got a hole in me now
Yeah, I got a scar I can talk about
She keeps a picture of me
In her apartment in the city
Some things in this world
Man, they don’t make sense
Some things you don’t need
Until they leave you
And they’re things that you miss, you say
Baby, baby, baby
When all your love is gone
Who will save me
From all I’m up against out in this world
And maybe, maybe, maybe
You’ll find something
That’s enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don’t receive you
You should turn yourself around
And come on home
Let that city take you in, come on home
Let that city spit you out, come on home
Let that city take you down, yeah
For God sakes turn around
Baby, baby, baby
When all your love is gone
Who will save me
From all I’m up against in this world
Now well, maybe, maybe, maybe
You’ll find something
That’s enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don’t receive you, well
Turn yourself around, girl
Come on home
Yeah, come on home
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Come on home
Yeah, come on home
Yeah, come on home
Yeah, come on home
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Come on home

Song Lyric Sunday – Falling Down by Muse

I wasn’t sure what I was going to post today, but then sometime in the middle of the night, I remembered Muse!  If you’ve followed SLS for a while, you’ll know that Muse has a soft spot in my heart.  I love this band, and this song somehow speaks to me right now.  It’s slow, melodramatic and sad as hell.

I did read on a Muse wiki that Bellamy wrote the song about his hometown.  He must have really disliked that place, eh?

I always thought of it as a break up song (how is it we seem to relate every song we hear to relationships?).  I particularly like the line: “Too late I already found what I was looking for.  You know it wasn’t you.”

Anyway, I do hope you enjoy this one with a nice warm cup of coffee and dressed in something snuggly and warm.  I know I did.

I’m falling down
And 15 thousand people scream
They were all begging for your dream
I’m falling down
Five thousand houses burning down, yeah
No one is gonna save this town
Too late, I already found what I was looking for
You know it wasn’t here
No, it wasn’t here
I was calling your name
But you would never hear me sing
You wouldn’t let me begin
So I’m crawling away
‘Cause you broke my heart in two, yeah
No I will not forget you
Too late, I already found what I was looking for
You know it wasn’t you
No, it wasn’t you, no
Falling away
You don’t ever see me free
No, I could not forget you
Falling down
Five thousand houses burning down, yeah
No one is gonna save this town, yeah
Too late, I already found what I was looking for
You know it wasn’t you
No, it wasn’t you, no
Falling down
Now my world is upside-down, yeah
I’m heading straight for the clouds

Song Lyric Sunday – Radio by Cash Cash

I had a band I was thinking of when I posted the theme for this week, but somewhere in the writing of it, I remembered Warped Tour in 2009.  Adelle and I went with one of her friends (who to this day still calls me “Mom” when she sees me), and there was a point where none of the bands Adelle wanted to see were playing, so we went with her friend to see a band she liked.

Adelle and I stood in the background laughing and joking about how terrible they were.  We were so judging the band and her friend!  It was later that year that (and this is where my memory goes hazy because I can’t remember if I went to the concert or not), Adelle saw them in concert again with two of her favorite bands at the time.  My daughter really does her homework before a concert, which means she ended up listening to Cash Cash a lot before the show and ended up falling in love with them just like her friend.

She started playing them in the car with me, and I ended up falling in love with them too.  The next summer, their album, Take it to the Floor, took me back and forth to my sister’s house and I will always have fond memories of their music.

I was reading up on Wikipedia, and apparently they’ve recently broken through in the dance community, but I will always and forever love their album “Take it to the Floor”.  It was hard to pick which song to play for you all, but I decided to go with an upbeat, thoroughly fun song that I’m hoping you will be moving to, just like I was when I listened to it today.

Enjoy!!

Radio by Cash Cash
Band members in 2009: Jean Paul Makhlouf, Alexander Makhlouf, Samuel Frisch, and Anthony Villacari
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

Every year I feel the same
I hate the men and lose the game
Now I find myself on top
Nowhere to start, don’t wanna stop

I love these lovely nights out on the club
Working late, it never stops
I’ll be your electric shock
And with a song, I’ll have your heart unlocked

If I’m on the radio, radio-o-o
Would you still love me so?
Or would you turn me off your stereo, stereo-o
Will you be at the show?
Screaming one last song tonight

Wake up kid, lets look for gold
This year’s the year that I’ve been sold
I signed my name and sold my soul
I took the risk, don’t wanna know

If I’m on the radio, radio-o-o
Would you still love me so?
Or would you turn me off your stereo, stereo-o
Will you be at the show?
Screaming one last song tonight [x2]

I wish I could live like this forever
And sing my days and days away

Armed with the choice beside me
I’m leaving this underground
And if I pack up my bags around me
Will you be filled with hate or struck with love?

If I’m on the radio, radio-o-o
Would you still love me so?
Or would you turn me off your stereo, stereo-o-
Will you be at the show?
Screaming one last song tonight
One last song tonight

Every year I feel the same
I hate the man and lose the game
Now I find myself on top
Nowhere to start, don’t wanna stop

Song Lyric Sunday – Love Addict by Family Force 5

I had a hard time getting into my daughters music.  She would play me things and I would turn up my nose, but then she would keep playing them and before too long I found myself listening to them when she wasn’t in the car.   Family Force 5 is one of those bands.

Love Addict is the first song of theirs she ever played for me and I have to tell you… I wasn’t much of a fan.  But the more she played it and the more I heard their other songs, the more I grew to like them.  It’s a catchy tune and I just can’t get past the lyrics… “I’ve got a fever and the prescription’s love”

We need more love, not just in our personal lives, but in the world today.

I have two stories about this particular band/song, so I hope it doesn’t take too long.

The first is that I used to play this in my office at work.  One day, a sales guy walked into my office and told me it was “devil’s music”.  I assume he said that because it was loud and scream-y and perhaps not what he’s used to.  It made me angry though and I said, “This song is all about love, so why don’t you just leave if you don’t like it.”  I very much dislike people who judge music.  What the hell is devil’s music anyway?  Maybe the devil likes Celine Dion… who knows??

The other story is much happier… 🙂

I bought Adelle tickets to see Family Force 5, but I put some money down and really went extravagant.  I bought her VIP tickets to a show they did right before Christmas.  Not only did we get pictures with the band and signatures of most of the band members, we ended up in the front row and finally ended up on stage during the show.  It was SO much fun.  I will always remember the time I spent with my daughter jamming out to some pretty fantastic music.

Family Force 5 concert

I’ve sort of stopped listening to this band, but the memories will always be sweet.  I hope you enjoy!

Love Addict by Family Force 5

Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

Hold up, wait a minute, put a little love in it

Doctor, Doctor, I’ve got an emergency
It seems I’m head over heels, a case of L-O-V-E
It’s like I’m glowing inside
Yeah, a light I can’t hide
And if this feeling is bad then I don’t wanna be right
What I’ve got in my soul gives me the highest delight
Oh yeah it’s better than drugs
In fact it’s sent from above, huh huh

Hold up, wait a minute, put a little love in it

Hey, Can’t kick the habit
Yeah, I got to have it
Yeah, I ‘m what they call a
Love addict, Love addict
Hey, can’t live without it
Yeah, G’on shout about it
Hey, I’m a symptomatic
Love addict, Love addict

Need a refill cause I just can’t get enough
I’ve got a fever, oh yeah, and the prescription’s love
So lay the truth on me
Cause that is all that I need

Hold up, wait a minute, put a little love in it

Hey, Can’t kick the habit
Yeah, I got to have it
Yeah, I ‘m what they call a
Love addict, Love addict
Hey, can’t live without it
Yeah, G’on shout about it
Hey, I’m a symptomatic
Love addict, Love addict

I’m blessed, I must confess
My heart is pounding in my chest
Cause this love’s the best
I’m just a love addict

Coming down with something outrageous
Lookout now cause it so contagious
This feeling’s got me reeling
So amped up that I hit the ceiling
Gotta clear my throat
Huh huh, now I gotta have some more

Hold up, wait a minute, put a little love in it

Song Lyric Sunday – The Great Divide by Breaking Benjamin

Breaking Benjamin is one of those bands that I have loved for years, but I haven’t listened to them for a while.  Adelle and I used to listen to their album, Phobia, when I took her to school.  We both loved it so much!

Last week, I was looking for something to listen to and thought of Breaking Benjamin. When I pulled them up on Apple Music, I noticed they released a new album last year – Dark Before Dawn.  I’ve honestly listened to nothing else since.  I can’t get enough of the album.  It made it hard to choose which song I was going to feature for Song Lyric Sunday because I love every one of them; but this song just speaks to me.

I realized today that the entire album is really about death.  Not necessarily happy stuff, but the way they put songs together, their lyrics and harmonies always give me chills.  I know they are more grunge/rock and roll than what I normally post, but I think you should give them a try.  You never know… you might just get hooked on them too!

The Great Divide by Breaking Benjamin
Written by Benjamin Burnley (Founder and frontman for the band)
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

Carry me all through the night
I am the last light fading
Leave all the lost souls behind
Show me the silence breaking
And when you’re lost and out of time
I will be right here waiting
And when your dreams return to life
I’ll be forever fading
And we’ll fall behind

So I’ll wait for you
As I keep your faith alive
And I’ll pray for you
As we cross the great divide

Bury the wounds deep inside
Rupture the fault line breaking
Dream of the world left behind
Show us we’re worth forsaking
And when the cold begins to rise
Darkness is overtaking
And when the fear is satisfied
I’ll be forever changing
As we all arise

So I’ll wait for you
As I keep your faith alive
And I’ll pray for you
As we cross the great divide
And I’ll break for you
As I open up the sky
And I’ll stay for you
As we cross the great divide

Follow the sunlight down
Cry clear and loud
Heaven won’t help us now
But it’s better this way
Warm light wash me away

So I’ll wait for you
As I keep your faith alive
And I’ll pray for you
As we cross the great divide
And I’ll break for you
As I open up the sky
And I’ll stay for you
As we cross the great divide
