Song Lyric Sunday – She’s Always a Woman by Billy Joel

There’s just something about Billy Joel on a Sunday afternoon, isn’t there? I love his artistry, his lyrics and he is most definitely a master on the piano. This is the song my son played in the car the other day and I just couldn’t get it out of my head.

I’m assuming you all know and love this song, but it’s always fun to listen to old favorites. I do hope you enjoy!

She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child but she’s always a woman to me
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth but she’ll never believe you
And she’ll take what you give her as long as it’s free
Yeah she steals like a thief but she’s always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
She’s ahead of her time
Oh, she never gives out and she never gives in
She just changes her mind
And she’ll promise you more than the garden of Eden
Then she’ll carelessly cut you and laugh while you’re bleeding
But she brings out the best and the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself ’cause she’s always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
She’s ahead of her time
Oh, she never gives out and she never gives in
She just changes her mind
She is frequently kind and she’s suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases, she’s nobody’s fool
But she can’t be convicted, she’s earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you
But she’s always a woman to me

Song Lyric Sunday – And So It Goes by Billy Joel

I know I’m not alone in my belief that relationships are hard; and it doesn’t matter if it’s your lover, your parents, your children or a friend.  But I also believe that they are worth it.  I would rather experience the ups and downs of relationships than to be alone.

When I first heard this song, I felt like Billy Joel tore the lyrics directly out of my soul.  It was a dark time in my life and I felt the struggle every single day.  “And this is why my eyes are closed.  It’s just as well for all I’ve seen.”

I keep trying to write about this song, but I’m starting to believe the song says it all.  It touches me deeply and I cry every time I hear it.  I believe if there is a loss for words, sometimes it doesn’t work to try and force things.  So, I will let Billy Joel sing his beautiful lyrics as he plays the piano masterfully.  I hope you enjoy!

And So It Goes by Billy Joel
Written by Billy Joel
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I’ve held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It’s just as well for all I’ve seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you’re the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That’s if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you’re the only one who knows

The Song Lyric Sunday theme for this week it to celebrate singer/songwriters.  It is open to anyone who wants to share music, so please feel free to click the link, read the rules and post one of your own.

Song Lyric Sunday – Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) by Billy Joel

Since I had some amazing baby news that I wrote about yesterday, I wanted to find a song choice inspired by it. I was looking for an entirely different song when this one popped up and I knew this one was perfect.

I love Billy Joel and this is one of my favorite songs he sings. He wrote the song about his daughter. The other pretty great thing is that my daughter and her dad are inspired by this song and she had him write the lyrics “wherever you may go, no matter where you are, I never will be far away,” and she had that tattooed on her arm. It is truly lovely.

I know this isn’t an obscure choice, but sometimes pulling up older music that you used to love is like finding the song for the first time all over again.

I hop you enjoy this installment of Song Lyric Sunday. Feel free to read the rules below and post one of your own.

Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) by Billy Joel
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you’ve been asking me
I think you know what I’ve been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Goodnight, my angel
Now it’s time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I’m rocking you to sleep
The water’s dark
And deep inside this ancient heart
You’ll always be a part of me

Goodnight, my angel
Now it’s time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we’ll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on…
They never die
That’s how you
And I
Will be
