Song Lyric Sunday – Cry Freedom by Dave Matthews Band

There were so many choices this week that I found myself doing the whole “Freedom songs” Google search.  I probably wouldn’t have picked this one, but as soon as I read it, I remembered this album.  I used to own this album!!  It’s crazy how time passes and you sort of forget some really great music that you used to listen to.

I think that’s harder to do these days, what with all the streaming music sites, but in the early to mid nineties, all you had was the radio and CD’s.  I grew up making mixed tapes and then mixed CD’s in my early adult-hood, but that has now changed to streaming music on my phone.  It’s crazy how far we’ve come in such a short time.

Anyway, as soon as I read the lyrics, I realized that this song says exactly what I was thinking when I posted the prompt.  My daughter posted a video on Facebook the other day of a well-known comedian talking about our freedom.  We have the freedom to speak out.  We have the freedom to, I don’t know, change your mind if you were someone who voted this less-than-ideal President into office.  Although, they obviously had the freedom to do that too… Anyway, I’m not happy about the state of things, but perhaps we are all playing it too silent and too nice.

But, onto the brilliance of the Dave Matthews Band.  The lyrics, the band, and the overall beauty of this song is mesmerizing.  I don’t think I really cared for it back when I owned the CD, but my tastes have changed and I truly appreciate it today and will add it to my playlists.

I hope you enjoy!

Written by Dave Matthews

How can I turn away
Brother/Sister go dancing
Through my head
Human as to human
The future is no place
To place your better days

Cry freedom cry
From a crowd 10,000 wide
Hope laid upon hope
That this crowd will not subside
Let this flag burn to dust
And a new a fair design be raised
While we wait head in hands
Hands in prayer
And fall into a dreamless sleep again
And we wave our hands

Hands and feet are all alike
But gold between divide us
Hands and feet are all alike
But fear between divide us
All slip away

There was a window and by it stood
A mirror in which
He could see himself
He thought of something
Something he had never had but hoped would come along
Cry freedom, cry
From deep inside
Where we are all confined
While we wave hands in fire
Wave our hands

Hands and feet are all alike
But gold between divide us
Hands and feet are all alike
But fear between divide us,
Slip away
In this room stood a little child
And in this room this little child
She would remain
Until someone might decide
To dance this little child
Across this hall
Into a cold, dark, space
Where she might never trace her way across this crooked mile
Across this crooked page
Cry freedom, cry
From deep inside where
We are all confined
Till we wave our hands

How can I turn away
Brother/Sister go dancing
Through my head
Human as to human
The future is no place
To place your better days

Hands and feet are all alike
But gold between divide us
Hands and feet are all alike
But fear between divide us
Hands and feet are all alike
Hear what I say
Hear what I say
Oh, so be it

How can I turn away
Brother/Sister go dancing
Through my head
Human as to human
The future is no place
To place your better days

  1. Nice song and lyrics. I’ve never heard it before, and really never heard much of the Dave Matthews Band songs. I think my daughter saw them in concert once, a long time ago. She liked them a lot. 🙂
