Song Lyric Sunday – Viva La Vida by Coldplay

To be honest, this one was kind of difficult for me this week.  Music is such a huge part of my life and memories and I’ve already posted about most of them.  I was willing to re-do one or two of them, but then I remembered this song, and I figured it was perfect.

I’ve always shared music with my kids and I’m so happy that they grew up with a love for music.  They’ve all developed their own tastes, though, which is why this choice is perfect.  It took me back to those days when I had just left their dad and was living in an apartment with them.  I had to pick them up from daycare or their dad’s house, and we used to listen to my iPod while we were driving home.  I used to give each one of them a choice of song, which usually got us all the way home.

Adelle picked one of her heavy rock (usually screamy) songs.  Jaxon would pick country music  and Andru always picked this song.  Every time he picked it, the other two would groan.  I don’t know why he loves it so much and why they, in turn, disliked it so much, but it it will always remind me of my kids and their very different personalities and tastes in music.

I had the opportunity to see Coldplay live in concert with Andru last year (which I, of course posted about already) and he was stoked when they played this song.  It isn’t my favorite Coldplay song, but I will always love it for the memories.

Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing,
“Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!”
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
Once you’d gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know St. Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know St. Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

  1. The memory you have of you and your children listening to the songs is wonderful! … I really like this song. I like the words, and there’s just something about the music that is special. 🙂
