Song Lyric Sunday – Let’s Hurt Tonight by One Republic

I know you all know this, but relationships are just hard.  I’ve always told myself that love is worth it, though.  Sometimes, we have to accept that there will be pain in order to move to the next step.

I’ve always believed that just talking it through will solve most any problem in a relationship, but that isn’t always true.  While I agree with the sentiment behind this song, I also realize it isn’t always possible to lock the door and hash it out until there’s a resolution.

I was a huge fan of One Republic when they first came out, but I saw them perform live on TV and was seriously disappointed.  Perhaps that’s changed and they’ve grown, but regardless, I found this song captivating.

Also, I heard it for the first time while watching the movie Collateral Beauty.  If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.  It’s a heart breaker, but the message is simply beautiful.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the beauty of the song and remember to hold on to love, even through the pain.

Le’ts Hurt Tonight by One Republic
Written by Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

When, when we came home
Worn to the bones
I told myself, “This could get rough.”

And when, when I was off,
Which happened a lot
You came to me and said, “That’s enough.”

Oh, I know that this love is pain
But we can’t cut it from out these veins,
No

So I’ll get the lights and you lock the doors
We ain’t leaving this room ’til we both feel more
Don’t walk away, don’t roll your eyes
They say love is pain.
Well, darling, let’s hurt tonight

When, when you came home
Worn to the bones
I told myself, “This could be rough.”

Oh, I know you feel insane
Tell me something that I can explain,
Oh

I’ll get the lights and you lock the doors
Tell me all of the things that you couldn’t before
Don’t walk away, don’t roll your eyes
They say love is pain.
Well, darling, let’s hurt tonight
If this love is pain then, darling, let’s hurt, oh, tonight

So you get the lights and I’ll lock the doors
Let’s say all of the things that we couldn’t before
Won’t walk away, won’t roll my eyes
They say love is pain.
Well, darling, let’s hurt tonight
If this love is pain, then, honey, let’s love tonight

      • That’s probably what it is – it’s just easier really. I probably won’t be in the market to try again for another decade or so. I got burned on my last one because my last girlfriend wants kids whereas I do not (for a multitude of reasons), thus leading to us parting ways as there’s no working through that difference.

I figured I’ll have better luck in that older age bracket when I have the middle-aged divorcees with grown children and that won’t be an issue. 😛

  1. Relationships are hard sometimes. Sometimes they add stress to our lives. We all have our own place to draw the line where too much pain outweighs the benefits of the relationship. That line may even change over time. For me, if there is more pain inflicted than comfort given over time, if someone was hurting me intentionally and it was affecting my health and well-being like it did in the past, I would walk away. I decided about ten years ago that it was better to be single than to be in a relationship that made me sick. Now, being in a healthy relationship is a surprise blessing.

  2. Yes relationships can be hard. But how wonderful it is that we can show forth love and compassion. That was beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Love you sweet girl.
