As I mentioned in yesterday’s theme post, I’m not a huge fan of 80’s music. I think some of it is the fact that it brings back emotional memories that are uncomfortable, but some of it is also a constant battle we had with my parents while growing up. I remember that much of what we tried to listen to was basically banned in our house and we spent a lot of time hiding it from them.
I don’t know what it is about music, but when you share it with someone (even your parents) I think you’re looking for some sort of validation, and when you don’t get it, or you’re told it’s “devil’s music”, it hurts. Not only that, but a message like that sticks itself in your brain. I still find myself feeling guilty when I listen to certain types of music, and I have to remind myself that, while my parents were trying to help in their way, they were just wrong.
Sweet Dreams is one of the few songs that I love from that era and can listen to over and over again. I don’t know what it is about it, but I find it haunting and beautiful, despite the lack of real substance in the lyrics (repeating the same four lines six different times…). Even so, I find the message somewhat helpful today: “Hold your head up, keep your head up, movin’ on.”
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) by the Eurythmics
Written by Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something
Hold your head up, keep your head up, movin’ on
Hold your head up, movin’ on, keep your head up, movin’ on
Hold your head up, movin’ on, keep your head up, movin’ on
Hold your head up, movin’ on, keep your head up
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something

I really appreciate what you have to say…and, I’m “following” you, and don’t expect you to “follow me”, because the overwhelming majority of my posts reference 80’s music (and, lots of it)…these come in the form of wordplay in the context og growing pains and current triumphs. Thanks for sharing…I look forward to our connection (no pressure 🙂 )

Very brave of you to go with this theme if the music of the decade brings back some difficult memories for you. I was lucky enough to have parents who simply sighed and tutted at my music (and occasionally introduced me to their own favourites) but I know it’s very painful to disagree with your parents about anything at that age. I hope you’ve heard lots of new 80s music today that doesn’t hold any negative associations.

I learned a lot about myself, that’s for sure. The best thing I learned was that it isn’t all 80’s music, so I feel that I’m more free to explore music from that time. 😉

Her voice is so rich and the music has a classic feel to it. Seems like I remember hearing she had classical training. The hold your head up part is worth repeating.

Wow, banned. Music is one of things that banning would only make more attractive, I’d guess. Good choice in this one. A classic. The lyrics are uplifting and observational.

Anything is more attractive when it’s banned… as a teenager anyway. 😏😉

I still love that song!! The 80’s was so versatile in music. When my son was 5, we invited almost the entire street and had a Halloween party since his birthday was Nov 7th…I had just purchased Michael Jackson’s Thriller and the kids loved it. We had plenty of cardboard for the kids to practice their break dancing too. I was so lucky with music, my mom was so hip letting us listen to whatever was on the hit parade in the 60’s with the Beatles and Rolling Stones. I think of my poor grandmother (who raised us) who had to hear us play music all the time. Maybe it was a blessing that she could not hear in one ear… Here`s mine https://tracesofthesoul.wordpress.com/2017/04/03/the-greatest-love-of-all-song-lyric-sunday/

If I were to choose the best time for music , it would be difficult! Of course the mid 60’s to mid 70’s is my teens… I really enjoyed the ’90’s as well. Each period shares a time in my life… that’s why music is so powerful. The mid 90’s was like my teens all over again for me…separated and rediscovering myself again.
My son played guitar and I was able to rediscover 70’s rock I had not appreciated as much since I was so much into Motown as a teen.. our children allow us to experience along with them!

It’s so true! I loved the 90’s music, but I really rediscovered music in the last decade and was able to share that with my daughter. I just love music so much! 😉
