Crawling through the dank, dark tube, I glimpse the bright splash of light ahead of me. It’s everything I’ve longed for and I can’t quite bring myself to believe.
Every night the door was locked.
Tonight was different.
A dream? Perhaps. It’s not unlike many I’ve had in here, but somehow this feels different.
I can feel others sharing my journey to freedom. They scuttle across my hands and tickle across my neck. Did any of them also share my cell? I pause to wonder if perhaps we could chat for a while; they really are lovely creatures, all legs, hair and bright shiny eyes.
I continue my slog through the dark, finding comfort in my travelling companions. They must long for the light as much as I do.
One hand in front of the other, followed by my knees; it’s almost become a dance of sorts. Suddenly, my hand lands on what can only be grass. I pull the rest of my body through the tunnel and sit.
So much air, the light!
So much to see; I’m paralyzed.
The spiders don’t share my stillness. They scurry away, fearless and free.
The rules for Sunday Photo Fiction are to write around 200 words in either poetry or story form based on the photo prompt. I also chose to combine Just Jot It January where the prompt today is “Spider.”
