Song Lyric Sunday – And So It Goes by Billy Joel

I know I’m not alone in my belief that relationships are hard; and it doesn’t matter if it’s your lover, your parents, your children or a friend.  But I also believe that they are worth it.  I would rather experience the ups and downs of relationships than to be alone.

When I first heard this song, I felt like Billy Joel tore the lyrics directly out of my soul.  It was a dark time in my life and I felt the struggle every single day.  “And this is why my eyes are closed.  It’s just as well for all I’ve seen.”

I keep trying to write about this song, but I’m starting to believe the song says it all.  It touches me deeply and I cry every time I hear it.  I believe if there is a loss for words, sometimes it doesn’t work to try and force things.  So, I will let Billy Joel sing his beautiful lyrics as he plays the piano masterfully.  I hope you enjoy!

And So It Goes by Billy Joel
Written by Billy Joel
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I’ve held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It’s just as well for all I’ve seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you’re the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That’s if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you’re the only one who knows

  1. Hmm, we both went a similar direction with this theme it seems like. Though I’m on the opposite end of the relationship spectrum as you (single and no desire to do that again) but I still know the sting of heartbreak.

At any rate this is a good song – the style reminds me almost of a church hymn really.

    • For some reason, I could never give up on love, although I had plenty of reasons. Now I’m happy I didn’t, but I understand your choice not to. ❤️

I can totally see the hymn relation.😉 I’m happy you liked it!

  2. I believe whole-heartedly that love is real and possible, but I also believe that some of us are truly better, happier, more whole, alone. I love Billy Joel and his music. I love his endless willingness to hope, maybe this time…

Yet he shadows it with his bittersweet certainty that it isn’t up to him.

Thanks for sharing this, Helen. I don’t recall having heard it before — not that that means I haven’t! 😉

  3. Thanks for sharing. That is one I didn’t know yet. And reminds me I haven’t listened to him for ages. One of my favourites he is to go a little Yoda ;-). Have a great week!
