Song Lyric Sunday – Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald

I’m not a huge Jazz fan – it can get a little much for me at times, but there are some songs that are classic and can take on a meaning all their own.  I think what makes this one so amazing is Ella Fitgerald; her voice is so smooth and silky and I just can’t get enough.

The lyrics to the song are simple, but they make me think of childhood innocence and how Mom and Dad made it all better.  I can’t remember feeling that way a whole lot when I was growing up, but I know I felt it sometimes and it was a magical feeling.  I believe there is a far deeper meaning in this song, but I can only imagine it will mean different things to different people.  I just know that the song gives me chills when I hear it and I can’t quite explain why.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush little baby, Don’t you cry

One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky
But ’til that morning, there ain’t nothin’ can harm you
With Daddy and Mommy standin’ by
