SoCS – Zombies!

I was thinking of maybe two words, but I decided to look up words with “mb” in them online and I’m astounded at how many words there are.  I’m overwhelmed and have no idea what to write about now…

Okay, so I’ve settled on zombies.

I don’t know why I’ve always been fascinated with zombies.  I don’t even know how young I was when my older brother let me watch one with him.  My parents didn’t know, of course, and I’m sure it freaked me out the first time; but there was always something so fascinating about them.

Or maybe I just knew that they couldn’t possibly be real…

It’s crazy when you think about it, though.  Zombie stories are all so similar.  There’s a virus that gets out and infects the world – it could be a government conspiracy but it could also just appear and there’s no explanation or story behind it.  There are just zombies.

Does anyone know the origin of zombies?  I’m not sure I’ve ever bothered to look it up, where they came from.  I might just do that after I write this.

I am one of millions who watch The Walking Dead.  My daughter watched the first season when it actually aired (I’m pretty sure most people out there watched the first one or two seasons on a streaming service to catch up).  I remember her walking upstairs and freaking out about the show.  “Mom, you’ve gotta watch it.”

I ended up buying her the first season that Christmas.  It was such a new show and hadn’t caught on “mainstream” yet, so I had to buy it from Amazon.  I ended up having the week after Christmas off work and we binge watched it all week.  I’ve watched it steadily since.

There are many times when I have to look away because it can be just gross.  And there were many scenes that hurt me almost physically.  After one such episode, I kept asking Jaxon if he was okay (he was pretty young when he started watching and I just knew it was something he shouldn’t have watched).  He told me he was fine for the 100th time but finally asked me if I was okay.  I wasn’t, but I ended up letting it go.

I love the show more for the character interactions and the over-arcing theme of what makes us human.  It’s such an interesting concept.  At what point do we lose our humanity?  How much can one person handle?

Who knew I had so much to say about zombies?  I could probably keep going too, but I think I’ll sign off for the day.  I hope you all have a fantastic Saturday!

This post is part of Stream of Consciousness Saturday hosted by Linda G. Hill. Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “mb.” Find a word that has those two letters in it, in that order, and base your post on it. Have fun!

  1. I have a book called The Mammoth Book of Zombies, which is a collection of short zombie stories. I only read one or two, though, but plan to read the rest. It says in the introduction that zombies have a factual basis in voodoo ceremonies of Haiti and other Caribbean islands. Also, zombies rarely have success as novels like vampires and witches. It’s been seen in movies since “White Zombie” in 1932 with Bela Lugosi. I’m a big fan of The Walking Dead and can hardly wait for Season 7!

    • That is so interesting. It’s strange that they aren’t as successful as other types, but it’s true. I remember saying that it’s hard to find a good zombie movie and I was shocked that TWD was actually good.

      I can’t wait for season 7 either! 😉
