Song Lyric Sunday – Say Something by A Great Big World

I think walking away from someone you are still in love with is one of the hardest things to do.  There’s always a question… maybe you could have tried harder or done this or that to make it work.  Probably even harder is when the other person wants the relationship to end but you are willing to do anything to make it work.

I had one of those and it dragged on for a while.  He didn’t want to be in the relationship anymore, but he also wasn’t willing to do anything to end it officially, so I ended up having to do it so he would stop stringing me along.  I didn’t want to do it.  I had to do it, and when I first heard this song, it reminded me of that time in my life.

I suppose that as much as you want them to say something, it doesn’t really help when they do.  At least, not at the end.  At that point, words are pretty useless, even as much as you want to believe that they aren’t.

There’s something about the combination of the piano and the harmonies with Christina Aguilera that gives me chills every time I hear this song.  The ending is simply tragic…

Which leads me to the theme this week for Song Lyric Sunday – “break up songs”.  Of course and as always, feel free to post whatever you are into this week.  We love sharing music here, and maybe I won’t spend the whole day crying my eyes out listening to break up song. 🙂

Say Something by A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera
Written by Ian Axel, Chad King and Mike Campbell
Lyrics found at AZ Lyrics

Say something, I’m giving up on you
I’ll be the one if you want me to
Anywhere I would’ve followed you
Say something, I’m giving up on you

And I… am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all
And I… will stumble and fall
I’m still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something, I’m giving up on you
I’m sorry that I couldn’t get to you
Anywhere I would’ve followed you
Say something, I’m giving up on you

And I… will swallow my pride
You’re the one that I love
And I’m saying goodbye

Say something, I’m giving up on you
And I’m sorry that I couldn’t get to you
And anywhere I would’ve followed you (Oh-Ooh)
Say something, I’m giving up on you

Say something, I’m giving up on you
Say something…

  5. Oh I enjoyed the song and the video. I cried when they showed the husband saying goodbye to the love of his life. It was so touching when he laid down by her. Love you sweet daughter.

  6. This song breakes my heart, the words physically hurt me. Since my son’s wife informed my husband and I should take a step apart from them. So far I have missed my grandson’s second Birthday, I have not heard my son’s voice for weeks . Today is their 5th wedding anniversary and I am so sad. I have to follow my daughter in law’s blog to keep track of my son and grandson… I truly need someone to say something. My husband is as hurt as I am but he will not speak to my son and visa versa.

  7. This song is a sad one for me. I included it back in February for Love Is In Da Blog. It reminds me of my last breakup, how I felt he just gave up, but maybe things worked out for the best. I haven’t quite decided if that’s true yet.

I may try to stick to preromance days, for me, for my contribution to Song Lyric Sunday, for this first official time I’m participating.

  9. Though I love this song, it typically makes me cry . . . my daughter and my son-in-law were having issues a year or so back, & one day she posted this song on Facebook, and though I knew the song, seeing her post it just broke my heart, as I knew where her head and her heart were.

    Great choice, Helen!
