Sunday Photo Fiction and JustJoJan Day 24 – The Hive Compulsion

140-01-january-24th-2016

“C337, you are in an unauthorized area. Please return to your tank.”

The compulsion to obey the monotone voice was strong, but her memories were stronger. She was human. She could feel.

But how? Why?

The questions haunted her, but she didn’t have time. She continued to struggle her way across the stark lobby.

“C337, you are in an unauthorized area. Please return to your tank.”

Her eyes were focused on the big glass doors leading to freedom, but her feet started to slow. It wasn’t just the voice repeating the same words over and over again. It was like the computer had a direct link to her brain and each time it spoke, the compulsion increased. She had no idea what she’d find outside those doors, but she knew if she turned around she would find warmth in the hive.

“C337, you are in an unauthorized area. Please return to your tank.”

“I’m human,” she screamed into the emptiness. “I wasn’t meant for this!”

She wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince, but in the end it didn’t matter. She stopped two feet from the door, sat down and waited for them to return her to the hive.

The rules for Sunday Photo Fiction are to write around 200 words in either poetry or story form based on the photo prompt. I also chose to combine Just Jot It January where the prompt today was “compelled” brought to us by Willow at Willowdot21.
