Quote Challenge – Day One

I’ve been challenged by Nortina Mariela to do the three day quote challenge. Here are the rules:

  • Post one quote for three consecutive days which can come from your favorite book, author, song, role model, etc.
  • Nominate three other bloggers
  • Have fun. Try not to make this challenge “forced”

I saw the notification come through last week and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I decided to do song lyrics since I love music and I’m not sure I talk about it on my blog as much as I actually love it. The hardest part probably would have been choosing the songs, but luckily one of the rules is to not force things, so I’m going to go with three songs I’ve come across recently – well actually, I came across two of them recently. The other one is a band I have always loved but just found them again recently.

I’m getting all the lyrics from AZLyrics and I am going to take some liberties by removing all the repetition for ease of reading on my blog, but feel free to look them up on the website. I will also link to the song on YouTube so you can listen to the song, if you are so inclined.

For me, music is just as much about lyrics as it is about the melodies and I’m drawn to lyrics, probably because I love words and stories so much. The first one is hauntingly beautiful and the lyrics struck me deep in my heart, even though they are ambiguous enough to have a different meaning depending on who is reading them.

For me, it brought back memories of when I was deep in depression and there were only a few people in my life that I felt stuck by me and loved me anyway, even when I was telling them to leave me and not waste their time. I’m happy they stayed. I needed to know that I could be loved, even through my darkest moments.

“Skinny Love” by Birdy
(originally by Bon Iver)

Come on skinny love just last the year,
Pour a little salt we were never here,
My my my, my my my, my-my-my my-my…
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer.

Tell my love to wreck it all,
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall,
My my my, my my my, my-my-my my-my…
Right in the moment this order’s tall.

And I told you to be patient,
And I told you to be fine,
And I told you to be balanced,
And I told you to be kind,
And in the morning I’ll be with you,
But it will be a different kind,
‘Cause I’ll be holding all the tickets,
And you’ll be owning all the fines.

Come on skinny love, what happened here?
Suckle on the hope in light brassieres,
My my my, my my my, my-my-my my-my…
Sullen load is full, so slow on the split.

And I told you to be patient,
And I told you to be fine,
And I told you to be balanced,
And I told you to be kind,
And now all your love is wasted,
Then who the hell was I?
‘Cause now I’m breaking at the britches,
And at the end of all your lines.

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
And who will fall far behind?

Come on skinny love,
My my my, my my my, my-my-my my-my…
My my my, my my my, my-my-my my-my.
