SoCS – D is for Dessert

I think I might be cheating here, because dessert can be many different types of food, but you know what? I’m okay with that.

When I was younger, my favorite types of desserts tended to be chocolate. The more the better. So, you wouldn’t just have plain old chocolate cake; it would be triple layer chocolate cake. Or one of those chocolate cakes where there’s an erupting volcano of chocolate out of the middle of it. Yeah, those were amazing.

I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere in my late twenties, or maybe even later in my thirties somewhere, my dessert choices started changing. I started liking things that weren’t quite so rich, lighter things. I don’t know what it is, but I’m really starting to like lemon desserts. Olive Garden has these little custard cups filled with yummy goodness and you can buy one or three of them at a time. I always get the lemon one. I’ve had all the others, and they are good, but the lemon one I savor until the last bite and even scrape the edges wishing there was more.

I went to a really fancy dinner probably ten years ago now and I can’t for the life of me remember what I had for dinner; maybe lamb, or a steak of some kind. The one thing I do remember was the dessert. They told me all the choices and I went with something new that I’d never heard of before, hoping it would be good, but I seriously had my doubts and almost changed my order as the waiter was turning to go. I ordered cinnamon ice cream and I’ve gotta tell you… I still think about that tiny bowl of ice cream. It was delicious.

As I was thinking about it today, I was thinking I could probably find it somewhere in a store and go buy it, but then I realized it would most likely ruin this perfect memory I have of it. Is anything like that as good a second time? Maybe it would be. Maybe it would be marvelous, but I’m loathe to let go of the memory, even as much as I want to have that ice cream again. (Actually, now that I think about it… I did order cinnamon ice cream at Cold Stone about six months ago. It wasn’t the same, but it was still really good!)

Maybe some of you chocolate lovers are mourning my passing from a serious chocolate lover to more lighter fare, but I would tell you, enjoy your chocolate. I miss it sometimes. But then, I order something chocolate and always wish I had gone with the lemon or the fruit or the apple crumble.

The only thing I still enjoy chocolate on is a bowl of ice cream. I don’t think I’ll ever grow out of that one.

What about you? What are your favorite types of dessert?

  1. I love dessert. I just made a wonderful dessert. White cake poked with a fork. Poured strawberry jello prepared over the cake and topped with lemon pudding and cool whip. If you are interested I will give you the recipe. Good post. enjoyed it.
