Love and SoCS Are In Da Blog – Attached to Numbers

I’m going to have to hustle if I’m going to beat the clock, although to be perfectly honest, I’ve gotten to the point where I can bang out a blog post pretty quickly, especially if I know what I want to write about.

My boyfriend and I celebrated Valentine’s Day by spending the day in a casino. It was actually way more fun than I thought it would be and I learned something in the process, although I’m not sure it’s a good thing. He’s been trying to get me to go since we went in the first month we were together exactly two years ago. I’m not much of a gambler – actually, I really dislike gambling. There are so many useful things you can do with money and I don’t consider throwing it on a table so the guy behind the table can just take it from you one of them.

I suppose it isn’t a bad thing that we don’t have a casino close by, but it’s one of the things about living in Utah that makes me feel like I’m not quite an adult, that someone else has to make a decision for me to not gamble… but that’s another post I suppose. Needless to say, we have to drive an hour and a half to get to a small town on the border of Nevada in order to gamble.

My boyfriend’s game is roulette and I wasn’t planning on doing any gambling at all, but he went straight to the table. We took a break around dinner time to get a bite to eat then he was right back at the table. I didn’t have anything else I wanted to do; there’s only so many times you can watch and listen to the machines before you go batshit crazy. So, I was sitting next to him, watching him place his chips on the numbers.

He asked me a few times if I wanted to play and I finally relented – it wasn’t too hard to say yes when it wasn’t my money on the table, so thanks to my honey for throwing his money away on the table!

The sad thing, or maybe it doesn’t even matter, but the sad thing is that I didn’t really figure it out until we were done; but you tend to get attached to certain numbers or groups of numbers. Yeah, we were watching what number it hit and playing the odds on what it would hit next, but for some reason, we were really stuck on the high numbers, and I have to tell you, it didn’t pan out that many times, but when it did… well, you know, it always keeps you going back.

I’m a baby when it comes to gambling, so I played the groups of numbers and got two to one on my money if it hit in that group. It wasn’t until closer to the end where I started to play specific numbers. I didn’t hit any of those, but I noticed other people who won more than I did. They actually stuck to a few specific numbers then played others as well, but they always played the same ones. One lady won twice on the number 29 and she was sitting there for maybe 30 minutes before we decided to leave. Another guy put his chips on four numbers, the same every time and hit 16 twice while he was sitting there.

So, I guess it’s good to be attached to numbers when you’re playing roulette. Or maybe I’ve just had a bit too much to drink and lost too much of my boyfriend’s money to think straight. Either way, it was an enjoyable day trying to figure out where that damn ball was going to land.

I hope you all had a fabulous Valentine’s Day!

  1. When husband and I went to Vegas, we walked from casino to casino – they were something to see! We spent a little money in a few of them, but gambling bores me so I was more about the shows at night. Having said that, girlfriend, I’m sure if I’d won some big bucks I wouldn’t be saying that it bored me! And I’m not averse to spending a little money – just have to know your limits.

Helen, I love your posts. I’ve been meaning to say that, but keep forgetting. You’ve been writing some outstanding pieces lately.

    • Aww, thanks Kate!

I’m not huge on gambling. I personally think it’s a huge waste; but the boyfriend enjoys it every once in a while so I figured why not make the most of it. Definitely have to know your limits. 🙂
